An Generosity of Strangers: How a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life
During the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.
We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.
Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.
He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university β adjacent to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.
A day later I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion β but immediately informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.
As is common in NYC β a city where everything seems achievable β she declared: βThat can be arranged. What's your start date?β I didn't board the aircraft to London.
I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a postgrad program in international relations.
I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the courage or self-assurance to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.
What's more, that role at the university led me to a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and Iβm eternally thankful.
