Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such treatments should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
